What Is NFC and How Does It Work?

NFC (Near Field Communication) is a wireless technology that allows two devices to exchange data when they are held within a few centimeters of each other. It is the same technology behind contactless payments like Apple Pay and Google Pay. For digital business cards, NFC enables instant contact sharing with a simple tap — no app installation required on the receiving device.

Which Devices Support NFC?

  • iPhone: iPhone 7 and later support NFC tag reading. iPhone XS and later support background NFC tag reading without opening an app.
  • Android: Most Android phones from 2015 onward include NFC hardware. Check Settings > Connected devices > NFC to verify.
  • Tablets: Some tablets support NFC, but it is less common. Check your device specifications.
  • Laptops and desktops: Most laptops and desktop computers do not have NFC hardware.

How to Enable NFC on Your Phone

  1. iPhone: NFC is enabled by default on supported models. No action needed.
  2. Android: Go to Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > NFC and toggle it on.
  3. Test with a known NFC tag or another NFC-enabled phone to confirm it works.

Alternatives If Your Phone Lacks NFC

  • QR codes work on every smartphone with a camera — no special hardware needed
  • Direct links can be shared via text message, email, or any messaging app
  • Wallet passes (Apple Wallet, Google Wallet) provide another tap-to-share option
  • NexaLink provides all of these sharing methods alongside NFC so you always have a backup
