What is an AppSumo lifetime deal?
AppSumo is a marketplace where software companies sell lifetime deals (LTDs) — a one-time payment that unlocks a plan for the life of the product, instead of a monthly or annual subscription. Vendors run LTDs to raise cash and win early users fast; buyers get a tool they own outright, often at a fraction of the multi-year subscription cost.
AppSumo lists deals through two lanes. AppSumo Select deals are curated, staff-vetted listings. AppSumo Radar is the earlier-stage feed where newer products launch to the community first — lower prices, earlier-stage software. Knowing which lane a deal is in tells you how mature the product likely is.
The single most misunderstood point: “lifetime” is the lifetime of the product, not a promise of every future feature. If the company shuts the product down, the “lifetime” ends. And LTD tiers almost always exclude metered features — AI usage, API calls, cloud processing — because those cost the vendor money on every use. A deal can be an excellent lifetime license for the core product and still gate the metered extras behind a separate subscription. Read the tier's fine print for exactly this.
The 6-point framework for vetting a SaaS LTD
Every good lifetime-deal decision comes down to the same six checks. Run them in order — the first two are dealbreakers, the last four are trade-offs.
1. Durability of the problem
Buy lifetime access to a problem you'll still have in three years — a CRM, a business card, a scanner, an email tool. Skip LTDs for fast-moving needs (a trend-chasing “AI wrapper”) where the tool may be irrelevant before you break even.
2. Vendor stability (survivorship risk)
A $19 deal from a vendor that folds in year two costs more than the subscription you didn't buy. Look for a real company, live apps, a support channel, and a history of shipping.
3. Active roadmap
A public changelog or roadmap is the clearest signal the tool will still be maintained. No roadmap, no recent updates → treat the deal as “as-is forever.”
4. What's included at the LTD tier — vs still metered
This is where buyers get surprised. Map every feature you care about to the lifetime tier, and flag anything that's usage-based (AI, cloud OCR, API, storage). Assume metered features are excluded unless the listing says otherwise in writing.
5. Seats
For teams, seats bite before features do. A “team” tier with 3 seats is useless for a team of 8. Match the seat count to your headcount, not to the marketing.
6. Refund window
AppSumo's standard guarantee is 60 days — long enough to actually use the tool. Use it: buy, deploy for real, and refund inside the window if it doesn't fit.
Copyable scoring checklist (score each 0–2; a deal worth buying scores 9+ out of 12):
| # | Check | Pass (2) if… | Red flag (0) if… |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Durable problem | You'll still need this in 3+ years | It's a short-term or trend need |
| 2 | Vendor stability | Real company, live apps, active support | No company info, dead support |
| 3 | Active roadmap | Public changelog / recent releases | No updates, no roadmap |
| 4 | Included at LTD tier | Core features you need are all included | Key features are metered/subscription-gated |
| 5 | Seats | Seat count ≥ your headcount | Seats capped below your team |
| 6 | Refund window | Clear 60-day money-back | Vague or no refund terms |

The 5-year math (a worked example)
The reason lifetime deals sell is arithmetic. Take a tool priced at $12/month versus a $49 one-time lifetime deal:
- Break-even: ~4 months. After that, the LTD is pure savings.
- 5-year cost of the subscription: $12 × 60 = $720.
- 5-year cost of the LTD: $49 once.
- You save ≈ $671 over five years — if the vendor is still shipping in year five.
That last clause is the whole risk. The math only works when the tool survives long enough to earn back the multi-year subscription you're replacing. That's why Check 2 (vendor stability) and Check 3 (roadmap) matter more than the headline price — a cheap deal on a shaky product has a negative expected return.
Two more variables change the outcome: seats (a 10-seat lifetime tier replacing ten $12/mo seats saves ~$7,151 over five years, not $671) and metered add-ons (if the AI you need is subscription-gated, add its cost back in).
Work the full framing in LTD vs subscription and the deeper break-even model on lifetime vs subscription.
Six red flags on a lifetime deal
Most bad LTD purchases share the same tells. Walk away if you see these:
A v0.1 product with no track record
Early can be fine (that's what AppSumo Radar is for), but pair it with a stable vendor and a roadmap — never buy a raw beta on a “lifetime” promise alone.
“AI included” that's actually metered
The most common trap. If a listing says “AI-powered” but the AI is a credit pack that runs out or a subscription add-on, the lifetime tier does not include unlimited AI. Verify how AI is billed before you buy.
No public roadmap or changelog
No evidence of ongoing development means you're buying the product as it exists today, forever.
Seats that don't scale
A team tier capped below your headcount forces you into a higher tier or a second stack. Count seats first.
No clear refund window
AppSumo's 60-day guarantee is standard; a deal that muddies it is a warning.
Codes you have to “stack” to be usable
If a single code leaves core features locked and you need three or four to get a working product, the real price is 3–4×. Read what one code actually unlocks.

This hub links to two kinds of guides: explainers (how the mechanics work) and buyer's guides (which deal to buy in a category). Every buyer's guide covers real, competing deals with sourced data — not a single-vendor pitch.
Explainers
- How AppSumo lifetime deals work — vendor economics, Radar vs Select, seats, codes, and refunds.
- How to evaluate a SaaS LTD — the 6-point framework above, expanded, with the copyable scoring table.
- LTD vs subscription — the 5-year total-cost math and when each model wins.
- Are lifetime deals worth it? — the decision tree and three buyer archetypes.
Buyer's guides (by category)
- Best CRM lifetime deals — personal and sales CRMs with real LTDs, ranked on seats, included features, and 5-year cost.
- Best digital business card AppSumo deals — which digital business cards actually have a lifetime deal (most are subscription-only).
- Best AppSumo SaaS deals of 2026 — the broader roundup across categories.
Category-level guidance in one line: for CRMs, weigh whether the AI enrichment is metered; for digital business cards, most vendors are subscription-only, so a real LTD is rare; for scanners and productivity tools, check whether cloud processing is capped. Each linked guide does that comparison in full, with sourced competitor data.
Frequently asked questions
How do you shop for an AppSumo lifetime deal?
Run six checks in order: is the problem durable, is the vendor stable, is there an active roadmap, what's actually included at the lifetime tier (versus still metered), how many seats you get, and the refund window. AppSumo's 60-day money-back guarantee lets you buy, deploy for real, and refund inside the window if it doesn't fit. The first two checks are dealbreakers; the rest are trade-offs.
How does AppSumo work?
AppSumo sells software as one-time lifetime deals instead of subscriptions. Vendors run them to raise cash and gain early users; you pay once and keep the plan for the life of the product. Curated listings appear under AppSumo Select; earlier-stage products launch on AppSumo Radar. A standard 60-day refund window applies to most deals.
What does “lifetime” actually mean on AppSumo?
It means the lifetime of the product, not your lifetime and not every future feature. You keep access to the tier you bought for as long as the product exists. If the vendor shuts the product down, access ends, which is why vendor stability matters more than the headline price.
Are AppSumo lifetime deals worth it?
They're worth it when the tool solves a durable problem, the vendor is stable, and the lifetime tier includes the features you actually need, not the metered ones. They're a poor bet when your need is short-term, or when the lifetime features you want are quietly subscription-gated. The 60-day refund makes testing low-risk.
Do lifetime deals include AI features?
Usually not. AI is metered, so it costs the vendor money on every use, and lifetime tiers typically exclude it or gate it behind a subscription. Always verify how AI is billed before buying. Some tools sidestep this: for example, NexaLink Card lets lifetime buyers run AI on their own Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor over MCP, so there are no metered fees on the lifetime tiers. Disclosure: NexaLink Card is our product.
Can I get a refund on an AppSumo deal?
Yes. AppSumo's standard guarantee is a 60-day money-back window on most deals, so you can use the tool for real and still refund if it isn't a fit. Confirm the window on the specific listing before buying.
